Is it a kosher word file with .doc extension? Try Save as... and select Save as type ... Word document.
Try Select all -> Copy -> Open a new Word doc -> Paste.
Have you tried to change a selected block of text to a different style, with a different font size (e.g. a Heading style)?

There are options which allow you to lock the font, size, margins, etc. in documents. Sounds like whoever made that one locked the font size or used a font with restricted sizes.
Try copying the text out of Word and into a Notepad document. That will remove all formatting, fonts, restrictions, etc. Then copy it from Notepad back into a new Word document. You should be able to change the size after that.

nicely im not rather confident yet once you're utilising an older version of microsoft word then that normally happens. whilst it does basically save, go out, and wait some seconds and then open it lower back. could artwork if it does not basically reset the settings

yeah i got this the other day- just when i didn't need it.
I sent it to a friend who couldn't undo it either.
I printed it off, set fire to the document and did a small, vodka fuelled, voodoo ceremony. When I came too, word was behaving itself again!

Save the file as *.rtf . File> Save As rtf. For info, this removes all info re editing / macros, removes all the rubbish. Then, re-open the RTF file, save as .doc.

I haven't come across this unless its been protected to enable you to read but not modify. In this case, I should imagine if you Save As with another name, you will then be able to alter it as you wish.
