Pressure applied to the nerve endings causes them to constrict reducing communications with the brain. The information transmitted gets jumbled and the brain has problems determining where the problem is. The pins and needles feeling is a self-preservation response telling you you might want to change position. Once pressure is relieved communication is re-established.
Blood flow can also be restricted reducing the nutrient transfer
to the body's cells.

You have bent the arm or laid on it and restricted the blood flow to the nerves .. When this happens the arm goes numb... When moved and the restriction removed the blood flows again anfd the reawakening nerves give the pins and needles sensation..
