I am going to a wedding in 3 weeks. I bought a pretty, semi formal dress that could be described as gold or wheat. I just found out the bride is going to be wearing a light champagne colored dress. Will this be too close in color to her dress? I know you aren't supposed to wear white to avoid upstaging the bride, but will my gold dress be okay?

Wow, I didn't think I was being full of myself.
I was just asking about the dress being appropriate as there are rules of etiquette that should be followed, especially in a social situation such as this.
But thank you for all of your non catty remarks. Most have been very helpful.

Hi Michelle:
I didn't read into your question ANYTHING about upstaging the bride...rather I read that you are concerned about the color of your dress...period! Geeez!
Anyway, since you have now found this out (about the bride's dress) and if you have time to take it back and get something else, it may be a nice gesture. Otherwise, just go with it! I agree with the other poster that said champagne and gold are really different colors. OR....you could keep the gold dress for the upcoming holiday season and wear something else! Either way...you will be fine! Have fun!

If you can easily exchange the dress, that would be a nice gesture. But if it's going to be a big pain, just go ahead and wear the gold - it sounds lovely! When a bride wears a non-standard color, she should not be picky about what the guests wear. Besides, most brides will have far too much on their minds to care about what someone else is wearing :-)
I say this because I'll be wearing dark red for my multi-cultural wedding. Because the wedding is in February, I expect that some of the other women will wear dark red as well. Frankly, I couldn't give a rat's patootie! :-)

Hmm....... to me, gold and champagne are two completely different hues. Gold is darker than champagne. Maybe you could add a little bit of a fabric tied around your waste. If you're truly worried about upstaging the bride, I'd go with something different. Hopefully, you've still got the receipt? Or a good friend the same size as you...?
Good luck!

Don't listen to the people who think you're full of yourself. If anything you're trying to AVOID this situation! They obviously don't know much about wedding etiquette.
Now, to answer your question. First of all, I can most certainly understand you asking about this. Anyone in their right mind while shopping for wedding attire is going to assume the bride will be wearing white! I think the best advice I could give would be to take the dress back and perhaps exchange it for another. Good luck!

Since the bride is wearing a simlar color I would go with a different dress. If you still have the receipt you can probaly exchange it for the same dress in a different color.

If exchanging the dress, or choosing another for the wedding, is not an option do your best to get other colors in there. Not knowing what the dress looks like here are some thoughts:
Black or red or some other complimentary color sweater, wrap or jacket.
A bold belt or sash to break up the dress a little.

Why not have a chat with the bride about your dilemma, or even go over with your dress so that she can see it or try and get to see the wedding dress so that you can make that judgement.

Holy christ people, she isn't saying she's going to look better, but rules of etiquette advise against wearing the same colour as the bride.
I would talk to the bride and she what she thinks.

I have to agree with pspoptart - there is no way you are going to upstage the bride unless you are wearing a bridal gown as well! To think that you would is being a little self centered, don't you think? The bride and groom are who everyone is coming to see and be there for, not you. So wear your dress and don't worry about it!
