Do facilities for forensic investigation like the ones in the show, really exist, or is it just show business? Some Mexican friends would really like to know, and I don´t wish to hurt their feelings, especially when compared to the very limited resources and investigation methods available in their country.

yes, they are pretty much real.

the inside of the labs isn't as television pretty as you see, of course, since the Miami police do not have huge budgets. Nor do the police anywhere else that I know of.

I do see a few not real things in the CSI shows -- mostly they're such trivial details as the CSI:NY crew rushing across town to some site and having no backup from the blues -- in a city where there are 10,000 officers in blue you'd think a few cars worth could be scrambled at any time to back up a play against a murderer. And other silly stuff like that.

Yes, that stuff is for real, but very few jurisdictions can afford it. Most local police stations can't even do fingerprint analysis. It all has to be sent to a state, federal or private lab. The FBI is set up pretty well with state of the art equipment, and so are a couple of the huge cities, but some of the stuff on CSI Miami is unrealisitic. Most investigators don't do Crime scene invesigation in their street clothes, they wear special cover-alls that covers all including shoes and hair. DNA is a little more difficult to test, and takes a little longer than they imply -- it's not minutes or seconds --- at the very best it's hours. However with the backlog of testing needs, I would imagine only the most dire of cases get the quick treatment.

Most of those items do exist, in some fashion. The question is really how many departments can afford them AND how often they are allowed to be used. A friend of mine was a CSI of sorts, and what he always emphasized was that they needed significant justification for using any of the expensive tests/equipment.

Yes those facilities do actually exist. The FBI for example just built a state-of-the-art facility devoted to forensics. Most of the equipment is real... but the computer displays and how fast they work I bet is embellished a bit.

UNDER THE OMNIBUS SAFE STREETS AND CRIME ACT 1968-- AND AMENDED YEARLY, FUNDING FOR ITEMS LIKE THE SHOW, WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE THROUGH THE FBI.

RECENTLY EACH STATE 1992, HAS BEEN FUNDED TO DO HIGH TECH FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS. MOST STATES HAVE THEIR OWN SPECIALISTS WITH IN A CERTAIN FIELD OF FORENSICS TO EXAMINE AND EVALUATE AS WELL AS TO BE PRESENT FOR EXPERT TESTIMONY IN COURT.

SINCE THE STATES HAVE THESE FACILITIES AND CAN DO THE WORK LOADS THE FBI USE TO DO, EACH COUNTY SENDS IT'S FORENSIC NEEDS TO THE STATE TO BE DOCUMENTED FOR ARREST, PROSECUTION AND COURT.

Yes and no. Yes a lot of things they do can be done. But no, most of the time they can't be done the way they do it, or as fast.

It's like police chases in the movies. Yes they do happen, but nothing like how they happen in the movies.

ITs TV. Even if they exist, very few police departments could afford to upgrade to the new technologies.

They do exsist, but only in places like LV and miami, where it can be afforded. Many places have to send their exidenve to be processed at places like the FBI or large cities.
