statistics for where though? US? UK? where!?
to give you an idea of how big the problem is...in the USA between 10,000 and 16,000 dogs/cats will be destroyed TODAY in kill-shelters. now imagine that on a yearly basis...sad isn't it?
Here is a website about the INSANE numbers of animals that die in shelters in the USA.

Millions! I'm sure there is no accurate record, but having seen how many die in just one shelter each year it has to be millions.
Maybe when people have actually held dogs and cats, puppies and kittens in a shelter when they are put to death for no reason apart from the fact there is nowhere for them to go then maybe they will realize that there really are far too many animals in the world already and however wonderful Fluffy or Fido are unless you truly are bettering the breed and not just trying to clone your amazing pet they should be spayed or neutered. By doing so not only do you make their lives better you actually save other lives too. Surely that has to make sense!

All the numbers that are listed here don't include the ones where the "owners" walk into the vets office with their 1 year old lab that isn't housebroken yet and they want him euthanized because he's too big and bouncy.
Those numbers aren't included because no one knows how many of those dogs never reach a rescue or shelter.
All I know is that the number is mind numbing. And people want to know why many on here get testy with their answers when it comes to the spay/neuter questions or should I breed my dog questions.

The last year I worked at our local shelter, there were 736 dogs and 1029 cats killed. I was the one who had to decide which died so others could come in. Wonder why I get rabid about poorly thought out breeding practices? Mind you in my county there are TWO shelters who have similar statistics, so for a county-wide average, double those numbers, then add on the ones who get shot, run over, poisoned, and abandoned to starve, and you'll get a more accurate picture.

Way to many. Mainly because of irresponsible breeding basically known as backyard breeding. They have the ignorant attitude that it's my dog and I will do what I want with it. Well you BYB's don't have any morals as to what your doing to the dog overpopulation. The dogs suffer and die because of ignorant people.
Here are some wonderful, healthy animals at just one shelter that have been put down

Millions. I have heard anywhere between 3-6 million per year. I am sure it's impossible to get a totally accurate count, but suffice it to say, it is in the millions.

In 1997 more than 56.4 million (56,400,000) dogs were euthanized in U.S. shelters, according to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy
http://www.petpopulation.org/statsurvey.html
The results of this study suggest that the actual number was probably much higher, due to "the low percentage of response by animal shelters."
56,400,000 dogs killed in shelters in 1997. Staggering.
According to American Humane.org, "56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized."

*Number of cats and dogs entering U.S. shelters each year: 6 – 8 million
*Number of cats and dogs euthanized by U.S. shelters each year: 3 – 4 million (nearly 10,000 animals killed every day)

i think it's around 6-10 million (dogs and cats) who are euthanized.
nearly 1/2 of these are puppies and kittens (under 1 year) and 1/4 are purebred.
(shocking huh?)
