If you're willing to be patient and you have his insurance info then yes you can definitely wait until Friday to turn in a claim. Realistically, if you wanted and you had proof (police report, witnesses, etc.) you could wait months to turn in a claim.

The problem is, his insurance company could say that the damage to your car could have been fixed cheaper if you would have made the claim faster. For instance, say he knocked the paint off your car and over time it started to rust. The company could say they are not responsible for some of the damage because you had an obligation to act in a timely manner to save future damage.

Johnny, By all means report the accident to the police department first if they were not involved at the time of the accident. Did you swap insurance companies with the guy like you're supposed to? Your insurance company will not CYA ( cover your a*s) without a police report. Call your insurance company AFTER filing the report. The police will take a few pictures of your car to see where the damages are. Do not let this slip through the cracks. The longer you let this slide the guy that hit you will say he didn't hit you and you have no proof.

first of all you should have called the police at the time of the accident. you cannot make the police come out now and expect them to file a report. they have no proof of what happened. call your company and report it now. if the other guy admits fault, and doesn't want to go through his insurance, he probably doesn't have any. next time call the cops asap and don't leave the scene without a report.
