Maybe you should read a first hand account about someone who died and saw heaven. I bought this book but haven't read it yet. I, too, am a christian and have had doubts about the afterlife. That doubt is eating away at me and I feel the need to know what happens after we die. When my nana died I really started to think about such things. Anyway, the book is:
90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life (Paperback)
by Don Piper (Author), Cecil Murphey (Author) you can get it at most book stores or go online to amazon or barnes & noble. I bought mine in an airport book store.
Maybe we could read it at the same time and discuss what we have read?
I don't think you will get any scientific answers for your question. If you could, I don't think there would be any atheists. It's all about faith.
2 Corinthians 4:18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Hebrews 11:1 Faith is a sure confidence of things which are hoped for, and a certainty of things which are not seen.
I know how you feel and it is a horrible feeling. God bless you in your pursuit for the truth.

First of all, Scientist deny the Diety of God and all that God created. When reading the Bible we find in Matthew 25:10 that the saved shall be admitted into heaven. In 2 Timothy 2:12, we read that the saved will reign with Him in Heaven.
At the Second Coming of Christ the graves will burst open, the dead in Christ will rise first , then those who remain will be caught up to meet Him in the clouds and so shall we live forever and ever. Time will be no more. In a moment in the twinkling of the eye God will separate the saved and unsaved. To those who refused Him shall be punished at His coming, 2Thes. 1:8,9.
Heaven is the future and eternal home of the redeemed. This is in Hebrews 10:34, 1 Peter 1:4,5, 2Timothy 4:18. Yes there is life beyond death. We have a Heavenly home waiting for us beyond the stars, moon, and all the planets. Scientist refuse to accept it. Darwin is convinced now of the Supreme Existence and Deity of the Creator of all things. Please don't look at scientific ideas to find comfort. The only real peace comes from God and God alone. He will be there in those darkest hours of the night when you have no one else to turn to. He will be there to guide you while you help your children. He will never leave you nor forsake you if you call upon Him. Talk to Him just like your best friend.

As you already know there are thousands of belief and myths about what happens after we die, the truth is, non of us know.
However, from a scientific perspective it can be somewhat comforting.
Matter appears to be eternal. It changes form, but doesn't cease to exist. So the matter that makes up my body, the hydrogen, oxygen, potassium, all the molecules and atoms....etc. Have been around for a long time, and will be around forever.
In essence we are all connected and made out of the same stuff, stardust. The molecules that make up me, could have once sustained a dinosaur, or been boiling on a beach on mercury, or being sucked into a black hole.
The molecules and cells that make up my body, die and move on at an alarming rate, in 10 years, the cells that make up my body will be completely changed, so the thing that used to be me, will be elsewhere, perhaps out at sea sustaining lobsters, or in the ground feeding bacteria, and that is while I am still alive. So when I die, the matter that used to be me, will go on existing in different forms. It may stay hear on earth, or be converted into gasses by the decomposition process, where it may rise into the atmosphere and one day be blown off the earth by solar radiation to find its way into another galaxy.
The things that make up my body, have all existed for eons and we are starting to find that at one point, they were all compressed into a singularity, smaller than an atom. Which means the stuff that makes up you, me, all humans, animals, planets stars and galaxies was all touching and combined at one point in time.
We all come from the same stuff and will continue to exist after our death. This might not help, I hope so, because I find great solace in it.

I'm sorry for your loss. This is a time when people question their faith and truly OK to do so. I do not know if there is anything beyond this earthly existence. I am comfortable in my own belief that we are made of energy, which can not be destroyed (since I accept a basic scientific principal as true)
As a result, I believe that whatever energy moves me today will be recycled in the universe and so my spirit will live on and on. This belief, IN NO WAY, relieves me of my responsibility to live my life in a way that is pleasing to "my God"...who lives within. It is so Ok to question....we try to make sense of our lives. I also believe that sometimes, the "why" of life has no answer. It just IS. What is it you need to do to take care of yourself today?

I am sorry for your losses, that is a lot to take and I can understand why you would be questioning what happens after life. I am not religious, but I really hope we all go somewhere nice after we are done here. I am not perfect, but I have a good heart and do good things. So to think I would be sent somewhere bad just seems wrong. I'm just not sure yet where it will be!

I believe there is something for us after we pass from our worldly lives. Not just because the bible tells us, but because of what I have heard, seen and experienced myself.
I lost my son to Cancer in May of 2004 and I could share things with you that still make me think in amazement. Things he said, things he dreamed - although my sons passing was the hardest thing I will ever experience in my lifetime - I will say his passing was just as beautiful as his birth. There are reasons I make that statement and for anyone to fully understand they would have to have been there.
I believe our life here on earth is a lesson. We go through trials and tribulations to help us learn and make us stronger. We may not always understand the lesson at that time, but we do learn from it in one way or another.
With that said, I believe the best is yet to come. Not in a physcial sense, but in a spiritual one.
But just because I believe that, doesn't make it so. We all have different beliefs and I don't think having doubts or reservations are uncommon. I have had them myself from time to time. I think that is normal.
I guess it boils down to how much faith you have and what you believe in.
What is that saying I have heard before "I would rather die believing there is, then to live my life believing there isn't."
I believe - even though my faith gets tested at times, I just believe that is part of our life here in earth.

If there grew to become right into a dwarf planet close to Earth, it would have hit us some time past. it could have been in orbit for tens of millions of years. subsequently, during the theorized formation of Earth, this is known that an excellent physique like a dwarf planet hit the Earth, trillions of years back. this is believed to have knocked loose a chew of planet that grew to alter into the moon. that;s the only dwarf planet close to Earth i comprehend of.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

I believe when people die they go to heaven, but if they where really bad they go to a temporary hell or purgatory. I don't believe in eternal hell, but I believe in eternal heaven, and that everyone will eventually go there, because God is both merciful as well as just. I also believe in the spirit world (ghosts) and many NDE accounts (near-death experiences). Heaven is also a physical place I believe, as well as many options there.

As it is written...
13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words. (1Th 4)
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14)
There are also many examples of Near Death experiences that would provide more along the lines of scientific evidence...
