I agree with everyone here that you should always stay name brand if you can afford it. However, if you are just an amateur who takes family or vacation pics and is just starting out, the Tamron and Sigma lenses are great for the money, especially the Tamron 2.8 28-75 XR Di. For the money, it takes just as good a picture and has a longer warranty and it blows the pants off a kit lens. I sold my Canon EOS lenses and useTamron because I don't don't have to worry about the bigger replacement cost of they get damaged or lost. I can't tell a difference in quality and actually the Tamrons have better color saturation and sharpness. Go with your gut and don't be afraid.

It will depend upon the specific lens. Generally speaking, the Nikkor lenses will be better but there are exceptions.

For example, the Sigma 80-400 OS lens is superior to the Nikon 80-400VR, particularly since the Sigma has a built-in lens motor.

There's no Nikon equivalent to the 50-500mm zoom.

The original (non-VR) Nikon 24-120 was pretty bad, and outperformed by Tamron's 24-135mm SP lens.

So, a blanket statement is nice--"Nikkor/Nikon is better," but putting the answer or question into a proper context gives a proper answer.
