I've read poll after poll showing that a majority of American voters would not vote for an atheist and I'd like to know why. Being an atheist does not mean that you're immoral or don't care about people. It doesn't make you more likely to kill or steal, anymore than being religious makes you less likely to do so. It just means that you aren't convinced that there is a god. The vast majority of atheists are highly educated, secular humanists who cherish and value of human life above all and subscribe to high standards of moral conduct. Why should that make a peson unworthy of holding public office just because they don't share a widespread belief in magic?

I know it's very silly. In fact, the majority of our elected officials today are Christian. And let's see, we have all sorts of gay sex scandals in airports and other places. Sex scandals in general. Lies, mistrust, greed, arrogance.
Clearly, being a Christian is not indicative of whether or not you can be a good leader or even a good person.
I think it is perhaps because people vote for who they believe represents them as a person. And the vast majority of Americans are Christians who identify with the Christian message as presented in politics. This makes it hard to identify with someone who believes that Christianity is all nonsense.

Hmmm... It's because the majority of the population are theists, and some 'atheists' are quite outspoken about on how they will change the world into more secular and humanistic (basically turning the entire world according to their religion), these scared the majority of the population of cooperating with them.

Imagine voting someone as your leader, who have stated that he/she will change things into the ways you will hate and bash the very things you believe on. It's no suprise that some will not vote for him/her.

However, should an 'atheist' wish to cooperate in governing the community, then he/she should make sure that the religious values of his/her religion are aligned with the religious values of the community, and make sure that both of their religious values don't clash with each other.

In short, any 'atheist' that is voted might be someone who don't proclaim outright his/her 'atheism', also he/she even might disguised him/herself as a theist.

It's more probable that a conservative 'atheist' will be voted rather than the regular kind.

This conservative 'atheist' probably will allow prayer in public, allow the use of the word of "God", and so on.

In short, while an atheist might be voted, an anthitheist will definetly not be voted, unless someone skewed the vote.

They are brainwashed, judgmental, ignorant, hypocrites. They can't see beyond their own beliefs & are incapable of drawing conclusions based on knowledge, facts, etc. I find it very sad. What I find strange & scarey is that the majority of ppl in 2007 would rather vote for a person that believes in an invisible man in the sky & not logic.

As far as morals & ethics go, xians do not hold all rights & certainly do not display a great sense of morals, look at history & not just the wars. When someone says they are a xian or that they believe in a god does not guarantee that this person will act with morals. Atheists are quite capable of having a sound set of morals & ethics. Xians can't even agree amongst themselves what is moral, so how could we ever get them to understand or accept other religions or lack of.

It comes down to one thing: misunderstanding.

Just like with any other "outside" group, there is a lack of understand regarding atheists. I attribute this primarily to the fact that most atheists are in the closet. I didn't think it mattered one way or the other until religious fundamentalists started acting like they were the status quo. Then I began to get more active and outspoken. Almost every friend I have expressed my atheism to has asked me the most ridiculous questions regarding their assumptions and understanding about atheism.

As with any other minority group visibility is the only cure, so speak out atheists!

FYI: Pete Stark a US Rep from California is, to my knowledge, the only out of the closet atheist in US governement. He's been in Congress since 1973.

i might vote for whichever candidate has the extra suitable plan for the rustic. i do no longer enable religious perception to sway my opinion of politics. I wasn't specific who i might have favorite, Obama or McCain, till Palin got here alongside. I propose, yeah, she's a creationist, which notably lots is going to tutor how silly she is, however the rationalization i does no longer vote for McCain is with the help of her interviews. She's an imbecile, religious ideals aside. I essentially wish that Obama wins the election. Even residing in Canada, i does no longer experience risk-free with Palin via fact the vice chairman of the US. i might could circulate to Europe to experience extremely risk-free. extraordinarily if McCain croaked in place of work. Atheistically yours, JM Gendron.

I'd vote for an atheist if I believed that they would get the job done. But then I'm Canadian, and really don't give a rat's a ... I mean, I really don't care what a person's beliefs are as long as they don't try to foist them on other people.

I would, as long as their views are similar to mine. I see nothing wrong with voting for an atheist.

Because in America we retain the right to keep our nation a CHRISTIAN nation! How could a person who does not believe in anything greater than himself run a nation of Christians? We wish to keep this nation, "One Nation Under God"! When this no longer exists, America will cease to exist as we know her! Secular humanists and atheists do NOT value life nor do they hold the freedom to worship precious! They would dissolve our Constitution and do away with the freedoms that MY Christian ancestors fought and died to preserve! America should remember who it was that made this country great, and it was NOT the secularists or atheists! It was God who blessed America because her founding fathers looked to Him for direction! God bless America!

Wild misconceptions and a good propaganda effort from their church are probably the main reasons, if I had to guess.
