You need to visit the vet. Let them know money is a problem and no unnecessary testing or treatment is to be done, but you want to know what is going on and what can be done.
When you take on a pet, you also take on the expense of their care.

If i were to throw out random ideas I'd say kidney disease, liver disease, hyperthyroidism,.cancer... but I'm not a vet and speculating like this will not help you or your cat. There are many many many more diseases where weight loss is a primary symptom - some of them serious & some of them not so.
Trying to diagnose your cat yourself will only leave your cat suffering for longer & just increase your upset & worry. Sorry to state the obvious but the only person who can give you this answer is your vet & she really needs to see him/her a.s.a.p..
Explain your money troubles and ask that they do the minimum of tests needed & then you can decide how to proceed once you know what you're up against.
Really hoping it's nothing too serious but for your cat's sake & your own peace of mind you need to make that appointment.
Good luck

She could have diabetes or hyperthyroidism or any number of other issues that really need to be assessed by a vet.
Talk to your vet about your financial difficulties - let them know that you want her checked but cannot afford any extra tests and see if you can work out a payment plan with them.
If you get any other pets in the future it may be worthwhile to invest in pet insurance (most insurance companies have plans that cost as little as $10 a month) or create a savings account for your pets and put away $10-20 a month for medical expenses. By the time your pets are old enough to likely require medical care you should have a fair bit saved up.

That happened with my 5 year old male cat. He stopped playing, ate normal but he lost weight. Drank ALOT of water. He would hide alot too or sleep in odd places. What wound up being wrong with him was kidney failure. It was not from the recalled food, because my other cat was fine. But it could've also happened from something he got into, or he suffered some kind of trauma to his kidneys. I hope this is not the case for you. It is terrible to go through, and there is no cure for it. My cat has to get daily fluid therapy to help his kidneys not have to work so hard, plus he has to be on a special diet. Eventually he will have to be put down. I'm not saying this is what's wrong with your cat, but my cat had the same symptoms and that's what it was. Good luck to you.

My vet, when I took in ours who had lost 4 pounds in 6 weeks, said only three things cause that sudden a drop. Renal failure, diabetes or thyroid (which also affects kidneys). They ruled out the first just by looking at her, did a blood test and urine test on the other two and found it was diabetes.
She was put on a unit of Lantus once a day, which has her stable. It will cost about $200 but both the thyroid and diabetes are treatable. Though the longer you wait, the harder it is to stabalize their condition.

Oh dear.
Well, she is an old cat.
I suggest taking her in for a senior-kitty check-up. And tell the vet about your observations. He might suggest an x-ray: Take it so you can see what you're up against.
Now- I suspect you'll have to put your girl down too. That's what I ended up having to do with a cat of similar age and with similar symptoms. But make her as comfortable as you can until then.

This happened to my 16 year old cat - it is probably a thyroid condition. Unfortunately, you should have her tested. If it is thyroid it is simply a pill every day for her.
Good Luck
