BBBS is a wonderful organization, but a lot of times you are going to need to be 21+ with a federal background check.

You can certainly talk to hospitals, but a lot of them are VERY hesitant about letting volunteers come in and rock babies/hold babies, etc. for security reasons. Some hospitals allow it, but a lot have really cracked down.

Okay, enough about what you can't do. Let's talk about what you CAN do.....If you're not sure, call your local Volunteer Center. They're geared toward helping you find the right opportunity based on your schedule and what you're interested in doing. If you don't have a volunteer center, try calling your local United Way, or visting 1-800volunteer.org or volunteermatch.org online for some ideas!

Volunteer for what you really enjoy. Big Brothers etc is at least a years commitment and they will usually want older people. There is a lot of training and background checking involved. If you love animals the humane society is great. If you like to work with older adults volunteer at a senior center. You can serve meals at a homeless shelter. If you prefer working with people with disabilities volunteer for special olympics. If you really would rather just volunteer in an office or for special events contact a cause that you would like to support. and ask about their volunteer opportunities.

Help out at a nursing home. Or in a hospital maybe visiting patients? Check with a local hospital's policy on that. Go to a homeless shelter and help pass out food or just hang out and talk to people; help them feel wanted.
