You don't join them they recruit you from University, depending on your intelligence skills. The Secret Service are not known for putting ads in the Newspaper Small Adds.

I highly doubt there is any role in any intelligance service in the world that has a role quiet like 007. In James Bond there is often more shootouts, explosions, and collateral damage going on in another country then MI6 would want to deal with.

James Bond really fills the role of an entire department. Normally you have people that gather intelligence, people that aynalize information, planners, ect... If you really wanted to watch a movie that a bit more realistic, I would suggest checking out 'Spy Game'. While not the most realistic movie, it still beats out a lot on what an agent might do in the field.

The closest thing to James Bond would probably be a Non-official cover or (NOC). Most spies have diplomatic immunity because they work out of Embassies. The NOC does not have the safe blanket to cover their behind. Still, they dont run around blowing stuff up and shooting bad guys daily.

Bond's a field agent. Although the real "00s" end up being protection details for VIPs more often than intel gatherers.
