Just be careful that the container isn't whipped cream cheese. That could affect the results, dependent upon your recipe. But the normal rectangular block is 8 oz.

The blocks come in different sizes as well. (3 oz and 8 oz.) An 8 oz block is approximately 5 inches by 2 inches. Look at the packaging- the weight in ounces should be listed.

If you are using the cream cheese to cook something (like cheesecake) keep in mind that some cream cheeses in containers are the "whipped" kind, therefore are lighter and do not work well in baked recipes.

A large brick of cream cheese is 8 oz. It is marked on the package. It doesn't matter if it's in a brick or a container. The weight is the same.

Generally in recipes, a block would be the 8 oz. package. At least my cheesecake recipes do.

Yes, an oz. is an oz. no matter how packaged. Wouldn't a block be easier?
