My husband is in the USAF. He's wanting to adopt my almost 5 yr old daughter. Her father has neglected to keep contact in 2mnths and literally only pays the $198/mnth child support to stay out of jail . Is there any "help" for military families concerning this? I have an appt with legal advisors on AF Base this coming week.

Go to JAG. Me and my husband recently talked to JAG about that subject specifically, and they DO handle adoptions. They have all the necessary paperwork and will be able to advise you about what steps to take. Good luck!

The base lawyers can advise you on what you may need to do, but they can not handle the legal aspects of the adoption..you will need a civilian attorney for that. As your ex will either have to sign away his parenting rights willingly or you will have to go to court to prove he is unfit and the rights should be terminated.,, this is not a straight out, run of the mill adoption. You may have to legally prove he is unfit and apply to terminate his rights...that would be a custody issue first, then an adoption afterwards. This may be hard as no contact for two months may not be sufficent, especially if he is paying his court ordered childsupport (no matter what the reason he does so). Of course, if the adoption goes through, he will no longer be obligated to pay any support at all, so he may agree to terminating his rights. In any case, start documenting everything and find a good attorney.

Actually, yes, the Air Force does provide $2,000 dollars towards adoption fees. Check with the DEERS (ID cards); the program used to fall under customer service. They don't actually cut you a check...they will provide you with the forms to send in. If they no longer manage the program (due to force mgt) they should be able to tell you who does.

if you mean monetarily, no. all JAG can do is advise you where to get the help you need, they cannot represent you in civilian court.
