I just started dating a guy who is a police officer... he made a joke the other night about looking up my record. I questioned if he actually had, and he said no, but that he could. I shouldn't have anything terrible about me on there (biggest thing I can think of is one car accident), but I was in an abusive house as a child, and called the police on my parents/had them called multiple times. I also was in court approximately 4 times before my parents' custody was forfeited. I haven't been to court/dealt with any of those issues after turning 18. My question is, will he be able to see the stuff about my family? I won't be devastated if he can, but it's just that that's not really one of the first things I want him to know about me...

Thank you!

I'm sure he could look you up. My boyfriend is a cop and I'm sure he has ran me a million times. I could care less. I have no secrets from him. Anything before you turned 18 should be sealed if it is not criminal. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. If you want to ease your mind just tell him everything you think he might be able to find out about you. That way there are no surprises. Besides, it's not your fault that you grew up in a family like that. If he has a problem with that, then why would you want to date him anyway?

In the U.K all that shows is what you have been convicted of. I know this because I am a teacher and have to have full dislosure as I work with children. I was arrested another time, but was not prosecuted and that is not on my record (which was a relief) So I think, or at least, hope, your system is the same. Any more than that is an intrusion into your privacy and must be unconstitutional.

He should not look up any file or record he is not involved in. I would guess the things that happened before you were 18 have been sealed and he would need a court order to unseal them. Beside they were under your parents name not yours. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Well if he has he would be sacked immediately, I wouldnt want anyone to know that stuff either, i think the parent stuff would be under their names not yours and would think that any information like that couldnt be accessed, only cautions or if you have been charged for anything would be available.

Your record is just yours. Its your crimes and the like. If you call the cops, that does NOT go on your record. So no, those incidents will not be on there. They would be on your parents if any.

IF he does look that is abuse of power. However in most states juvenile records are sealed so he wouldn't be able to see them anyway.
