I'm fuming, how very dare people try to put the responsibility of a secret on one without asking. What do you say when someone tells you a secret without asking your permission, or even if you're capable of keeping it in the first place? I'M RUBBISH AT BLIDDY SECRETS

THE QUESTION IS NOT IF YOU WOULD KEEP IT OR NOT. I mean how do you react if you DON'T want them to put that responsibility on you.

I'm good at keeping secrets, but you're right - it can be quite a big responsibility.

If I 'think' someone is about to tell me something I would rather not hear, I quickly say in voice abit louder than my usual one: "no don't say it - don't tell me". That stops them in their tracks! Then I explain more gently that I don't really want to hear the next thing they're about to say! That should do the trick! It doesn't happen often though. I will usually listen to what people have to say, but sometimes we have to protect ourself too.

If you have to keep other people's secret's there is less room in your brain for other stuff!

Why don't you just very loudly and obviously betray their trust at every opportunity. Word will soon spread that you cannot be trusted and no-one will ever bother you again, of course you may loose some Friends along the way, but then how good a friend were they in the first place if they were deliberately and maliciously inflicting their secrets on you?

A dear friend once told me this when I asked him to tell me a secret he had about something. He said, A secret is no longer a secret once you tell someone . That's all I needed to be respect full of this "SECRET" I keep secrets to myself and have for quite some time. There is one deal-breaker, one must be responsible about plans to commit crimes, murders, physical or emotional harm to another/others.

Once a secret is told then it is not longer a secret. People must think they can trust you. I suppose that is a compliment, but you are right they should 'ask' first if you want to know the secret.

Dear Mrs Bad Grumbles, You are right. It is a flagrant presumption of your integrity which has to be stopped. It of course is OK to presume to a certain extent with people you know. But a person you don't know making that presumption is absolutely unthinkable and must be put to a stop this instant.

You as always make a good point in a slightly crazy way.

If they tell me without saying I got a secret first and tell me after they have told me I just tell them forget it I'm not keeping that to myself if I don't agree with it!! If they really know me they shouldn't have told me in the first place!! Does that make any sense ??? LOL

"I'm really stressed right now with personal issues, so I'm not the person to confide in right now!" and be firm about it. Cut the person off if need be and they will get the hint. Be prepared for them to take offense though. Or you could just be honest and say "I'm rubbish at secrets, so you're telling this story at your own risk, beware!! There's no guarantee I won't blab!"

Yes, they should ask you first. Kind of like being read your Miranda Rights. If they don't ask you first, you shouldn't be obligated to keep the secret. If you don't get read your rights before being arrested, anything you say can't be held against you.

And quite frankly, if the secret is harmful to somebody else, it shouldn't be kept anyways.

I can agree with Spiffs on that one he is horrible at keeping secrets. He always says well you never told me not to say "anything" LOL. I think it's only a secret if you keep it to yourself and if they happen to tell you are really taking a big chance that it will get out. I have had that happen to many friends.
