The tympanic membrane is an extremely thin barrier between the outside world and your brain. It keeps bacteria and microbes out. Earwax helps keep the bacteria from getting to the tympanic membrane.

Well you are supposed to have some ear wax. I worked with an audiologist for a few weeks. If you have a ton then it definitely does obstruct your hearing ability.

It protects your ears by helping the hair catch substances, like dirt, etc. If you clean to far in your ear the ear wax can buildup and affect you hearing.
