You should never pump gas into any vehicle at any time. Only specialially converted engines will work with LPG.

If you're not dealing with LPG directly through the valves into the tank then it's even worse. When it mixes with the oxygen in the air you get an explosive mixture in the confined space of the car.

Only a blithering idiot would play about with gas anyway. By law you should be CORGI registered to work with it.

Actually, the chances of an explosion are very minor. Today's gas pumps are equipped with vapor recovery systems, so there are little if any vapors when you fill your car. The biggest danger is the car being shifted into gear by someone in the car, and pulling the nozzle off.
It is far more dangerous to fill a gas can than to fill a car that is running.

It is not safe putting petrol in any modern car.catalitic converters in the exhaust system get white hot and are still in this condition when you stop for petrol, they are a very real and lethal hazard, any spillage or strong enough fumes can be ignited by a hot cat.con.This is printed as a warning in every car handbook, also advising you never to park your car over dry grass because of the fire risk with the cat.The cats do not function over very short journeys and are a useless piece of junk on local runs.Got that off me chest did,nt i ?ALWAYS BEAR IN MIND, if petroleum gas ignites it follows back to the source of the gas flow,i have been involved in an explosion of this nature,a truly spectacular event, singed all me body hair off, saved going to the barbers.

Using the logic of most answers, that it is dangerous, why are other vehicles allowed near you while you fill up? Just think, you park right over where someone has just topped up and overfilled. It's like the Mobile phone con. Half the garages have relatively powerful re-transmitters on their premise, and radar on the entrance.
The person you was filling up may have had a duff battery & couldn't risk stopping. Think about jump starting him.

It is very dangerous. A spark from a static discharge could ignite the gas fumes.
All states require that the motor vehicle be shut off.

I would say no. There is a risk of a spark igniting the petrol (or gas) vapour.

Even if the probability of this happening is small, it still isn't worth the risk.

You really shouldnt but if you do,and the check engine light comes on,go and open the gas cap, which releases the gases out of the tank, and the light should go out.Good luck
