There are different connotations to "sorry".
1. An apology: "I'm sorry I drove over your foot."
or "Sorry I drove over your foot."
2. Expressing condolences: "I'm sorry your dog died." or, "Sorry to hear about your dog."
3. It can be used in a slang way to mean not skillful or poor:
"That was a sorry excuse for a movie."
