Both Linux and Windows have got their own set of pros and cons. While Linux certainly is used mainly for servers, it is slowly creeping it's way to the desktop market. Currently Ubuntu-Linux has a desktop market share of almost 3%, which is the highest by any Linux distribution ever. Linux distributions are becoming more user friendly, and there are MANY (though relatively unknown) software available. In a good Linux distribution like Ubuntu or Fedora, you can do everything that you do in Windows. Moreover, everything about Linux is free without any restrictions (some distributions and software are non-free, but they don't have anything better than the free ones) . There is also no fear of viruses in Linux! Most Linux distributions have a huge community based support, something that you don't find in proprietary software like Windows.

Windows of course stays more user friendly and vastly more popular.
Then there is Mac OS X from Apple, which is as secure as Linux and also as user-friendly as Windows.

While Linux may be rated super fast and sleek and elegant and all that, it is somewhat burdened by the facts that:

- You may find only a limited amount of software available for it. (But if you find the software that covers what you need, to get your work done, then that's not a problem, que no?)

- Support is limited to your being able to settle into the worldwide sets of support groups online. You'll have to subscribe to one or more forums relating to your particular "distribution" of Linux, then ask questions, and hope you've phrased your question in a way that yields an answer you can understand and use to solve your problem... (But if you're somewhat of a guru or geek, then that's not much of a problem, que no?)

Else, Microsoft Windows, is the world's "addiction," and therefore has widespread acknowledgment through software availability, support, books, documentation, pre-installation on computers, and all that.

Have a good trip!

It really depends upon how you plan to use it. Linux is generally more stable and secure, while Microsoft is easier to use. Linux and Unix are better as servers, while most people use Windows for client machines since there's more software available and end-users know how to use it.
