Film or digital?
New or used?
Manual focus or autofocus?

1) check with the requirements for your course.

For film:
New: you're pretty much limited to the autofocus Canon EOS Rebel 35mm or for manual focusing, try the Nikon FM10.

Used: The Pentax K1000 manual focusing camera or the autofocusing Nikon N80 are both good choices

For digital:
New: pretty much all digital SLRs are out of your price range for new.

Used: Canon EOS Digital Rebel (also called EOS 300D); Fujifilm S2 Pro; possibly a Nikon D50. If you're truly lucky, a Nikon D1h or D1x, but you'd have to be pretty lucky.

you may need to shoot film but in saying that the college is likely to have a few film slrs handy. however you can buy cheap stuff on ebay to get started.

if you want a camera for the long term best to buy digital because everything has now gone that way. only a few shooting film as the primary capture method left.

buy the best you can afford to avoid the need for an upgrade later. the canon 40d can be used for pro work but I wouldnt bother with the 400d unless I was purely amateur.

Hi,
I own Nikon D70, i bought it a few months ago, and i love it, its so easy to use and is very good if you are trying to understand the settngs and modes.

I'am in my last year at school and iam going to take photography as a course in collage, and can't wait!

Hope this helps!

You need to find out what kind of camera is required for your course. It may be a fully manual 35mm film camera.

Know what's needed before you buy anything.
