Our family uses Wild Blue through Dish Network, and Dish Network has informed us that there is a cap on the amount of mb we are allowed to use up every month. If my son gets a PS2 and plays it online a few hours each day will it put us over the edge for mb usage? We are currently close as it is because their limits are very restricting. I would hate for my son to purchase a PS3 and find that he can only use it an hour a week. I have had to give up on Second Life because of this mb cap Dish Network has.

If I could get cable out here I would have gotten it by now. I have satellite because it is that or dialup. Does anyone know the answer to my question?

O.k. well if you can't get broadband or dsl, just stick with what you already have. Just tell your son not to play PS3 games online and the only time that he can connect to the internet with the PS3 is to download new demos and other stuff from the Playstation Store and that's it.

It doesn't really take long for the PS3 to download demos as long as you have a pretty quick connection. So if your son was to just download new demos, he would only be connecting to the Internet at least once per week because Sony adds new downloadable content to the Playstation Store about once a week.

I have the same problem at my parent's place in the Catskills. The mb limitation that we are subject to works on a 24 hour basis, so check the contract. Usually if you go over the limit they just cut you off for 24 hours.

If this is the case for you, I would just give him 1 day out of the week to play online (like Sunday or something). That way if he goes over the limit you aren't losing your internet for very long.

I also don't know if satellite works well for online gaming. I find that it it goes slower than regular broadband, so he may not even be able to play games online. I'm sure he can still downloads demos and videos though.

Just ignore the people that say "get broadband", they're idiots.

I agree with post 1. Get a Cable or DSL provider, ditch the satellite thing. I know of many cases where location USED to be a problem. More providers are getting to more customers now.
Shop for a new ISP.
To answer in regards to the PS3, yes, it will kill your bandwidth if it's online.
