I'm a college student at a local Christian college and I'm doing a speech next week.

Which persuasive speech topic would be more appealing in your opinion? A speech about the importance of making confessions, for example, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus”, “I am God’s beloved”. Simply speaking God’s Word out loud over your life. Some disagree with this because it tends to lie under the “name-it-claim-it” kind of confessing.

Or my speech could be on the importance of having good manners. For example, people take you more seriously if you display good manners; people are more likely to show you respect, etc. Our world has drifted away from using good manners whether at home or in public (opening doors for others; saying “yes ma’am” and “no ma’am” even at home).

Which one? Thanks for your input!

Actually neither is a very good topic, but I think the first is the better of the two. You at least have an opposing view that you can comment on and defend you view against in your speech. No one will really argue against manners being a "bad" thing.

Go with the first topic and make sure to include reasons against the "name it claim it" arguement; as well as reasons for (pro) your view.

The importance of making confessions is the topic I think would be more appealing. It's much more too it than naming it and claiming it...There are conditions that we must meet in order for some things in His Word to come to pass. It's good to confess the Word of God, but if we're not living(practicing) the lifestyle of what we're confessing then our confession is useless. So the problem lies not with the Word of God but us when it doesn't come to pass....

When I read your question, one thing immediately came to mind...

I have a thirteen year old son. Now, even though I have obviously known him for thirteen years, I am still amazed by him sometimes. I have found that the further he travels on his road to the knowledge of Christ, the more his "manners" come out naturally. He actually shocks me in some cases. Anyway, my point is this...

Since we are to reflect Christ through our words as well as actions, I believe manners (as well as many other things) fall neatly into that fold.

Depends who you are urging them to confess to.
Another human? No.
God? O.K.
Best go with manners.
2 Corinthians 6:3
1 Corinthians 10:31
Leviticus 19:32
Proverbs 12:18
are some thoughts that might help.
