Can someone explain old-earth creationism to me?

I have heard its something like this... each creation "day" actually represented a much larger span of time... like a million years or something.

So lets say its 1 million years... so adam was created on day six, god rested for a million years (day 7)... and... well... see... we're already screwed up... The Bible says Adam lived for a thousand years, and then goes on to talk about the ancestry, which leads us to believe Adam lived only a few thousand years ago... so confused...

I think what they do is just take the entire story as an allegory symbolizing God's separation from his creation.

Otherwise, you'd have plants living for thousands/millions of years before the Sun.

First, people have misinterpreted these scriptures. Second, nowhere does it say exactly how one of Father's days compares to one of our days. We only know that His time is different than our time. Suffice it to say, that in these scriptures, a day depicts a period of time. Third, The creation as told in the scriptures, was not done in the flesh, but in the spirit. Nowhere does it talk about how long it took for all this to come about in the flesh. If you will re-read these scriptures with this in mind, you'll notice how several things written there, make much more sense.

The one thing you must remember is that time itself is not a constant. This was proven by Einstein. I believe in theistic evolution, and the big bang is a part of that. This, of course, was initiated by God. After the big bang, the universe was much smaller than it is today. Therefore, time was faster than it is today. As the universe expanded, time slowed down. So a million years or so as we perceive it today would not have been the same in the beginning. Therefore, each "day" in genesis may have been longer compared to how we view time today.

I have many thoughts and ideas on this...the fact is I don't really know. We are working with limited information. I don't know Hebrew, so I can't read the most ancient texts...and I think originally it wasn't even written in Hebrew. Also, the most ancient versions of this have probably been lost. We would also need to know the writing style of the time to accurately try to guess at the meaning of the writing. Also, words don't always mean the same...even in the same language for different areas. So, the best we can do is guess and try to interpret it for ourselves...don't let others tell you what it means. Listen to their interpretations, and think about them for yourself.

It's all "allegory" in both "covenants": Galatians 4.
As if: 1 day [is] as 1000 yrs: Ps 90:4; 2Peter 3:8.

Two allegoric things to compare-i-son:
This God and That God
Creator and Maker
created and made
image and likeness
imperfect and perfect
their part and your part
before and after
law and grace
old and new
BC and AD

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

people who believe in the short version are not allowing for missing books of the bible that were lost over time. The OT (and NT as well) the books do not lead into each other like chapters, they are all separate books. No one knows which ones are missing.

Its known as the Day Age Theory - Hugh Ross is a huge proponent. It's on the complicated and convoluted side - as are most compromise positions. His website is reasons.org - but wear your discernment glasses before you visit.

If Adam and Eve had children those children would have had to have offspring themselves to reach the poulation we have today. The bible says incest is wrong but provides no evidence of how this process took place so one must assume that incest took place. Great piece of fiction that Bible.

it says that god created the heavens and the earth in 6 days etc. what you are referring to is that it is said that 1 day in heaven is like 1000 years on earth.

No one knows if god created the earth etc in 6 heavenly days or earthly days

Good point, I suppose they swear by carbon testing. Who knows why they believe in old-earth.

Hugh Ross is a proponent of the line of thinking. I'm sure he has websites.
