Your MIL is the one being rude for even thinking she had control or say so in your child's birthday. Fact is party gifts are usually opened AFTER the party for home parties when guests leave or taken home to be opened. Small children don't understand they can't keep what they brought, but it also eliminates a child from saying "that's dumb" or "I don't like that" when they open something and hurting someone's feelings. I'm sure your guest's will totally understand. You're footing the bill for the party and it's your child so you alone have the final say so in how it is handled. Your MIL can go jump in a lake if she doesn't like it, plain and simple. There is nothing rude at all about doing this at home. Your son will be wound up and excited about the stuff at the party too much so to really want to sit still and open birthday presents.

I think your two year old will not remember much, if any of it. So it's probably nice to have lot of friends and family round so when you video it and they are older they can see how much they were loved by friends and family all making the effort to be there, rather than just loads of decorations, clowns, cake, etc which I'm sure they will see and get plenty of in the future.
Could be worth trying to find out what your four year old enjoys and has interests in and have a themed party round that. Eg Spidermac - have everything spider themed!

Two year old is still a little to young but…
Games games games. Pin the tail on the donkey, or a piñata, or potato sack races, or any game really. Crafts are fun too. and prizes and balloons and candy and pop so we’re all wired and hyper and thymes like a pirate birthday would be so cool.

rent a jump castle..that's always a hit..especially if you have a lot of kids coming. I did that last year and it kept all the kids entertained and it was only about 180$.
