I don't know a lot about cancer but I did well in my persuasive speech class when I was in college.

I would use some powerful visual aides. I would think something powerful like real graphic images, like pictures of diseased lungs, trachea (sp) tubes, pictures of cancerous lungs, and then a picture of a healthy lung next to it. You could probably find them on there Internet if not the library will have medical journals or something like that I'm sure will have them.

I would use statistics they can never hurt. I agree with the first guy don't over do it, I'm sure you have heard the KISS principle which is very important for speeches. The Kiss Principle is of course Keep It Simple Stupid.

I would talk about different cancers lung cancer, throat cancer etc. You could use those annoying anti-smoking kids what is that group truth.com or something. They will have facts even though they kind of exaggerate for effect it seems, but you can use them as one source. I know that they make the Tobacco companies give out literature you could call them, and get some literature as them and use them as another source. You could also go into chewing tobacco and the effects it has on gums and cheeks with cancer.

So you can show the audience why smoking causes cancer and the effects that it has on people who have cancer after smoking for years.

Stats are good but eventually the reader ( and the person you are talking to) start to have their eyes glaze over.

I counsel patients on this subject on a daily basis..why not write an essay in a conversational tone? Come up with all the reasons why you WOULD smoke and then counter act those..

well your trying to persuade ppl that smoking causes cancer, so i would find some solid evidence to put in your essay. find out some statistics on how many smokers die each yr of cancer. what it is in cigs that cause cancer. and list where u got the information. hope this helps a little. good luck with your essay and have a wonderful day :D

First account stories of ppl with cancer that smoked. Smoking is not only linked to lung cancer, but many other types, if not all. I do know for sure that cigs are linked to my cancer, and atleast partly caused it.

Informative tone. You could accuse the cigarette companies of fooling us, or you could explain the addiction angle, definitely with statistics. I'd bring pictures (overheads), and I'd tell a personal story about someone who died too, too early due to an inability to quit smoking.
