You remember the old cliche' where the photographer asks the subject to step back. Then, step back a little more. And then again?
The wide angle lens allows the photo to be taken without the subject haveing to step back.
In a more realistic situation, for example, taking a photo in a very small space, where there is no room for the photographer or subject to step back, a wide angle lens allows the camera to capture more horizontal and verticle space.

Allow one object or aspect of a scene to be emphasized while other objects are de-emphasized. The extreme perspective wide angle lenses offer make this possible.
Using a wide angle lens to "get it all in" is the quickest way to end up with an album full of mediocre snap shots. Photography is an art of exclusion. Cluttering up the frame with too much useless junk from trying to "get it all in" results in an image with no obvious subject, which ultimately means a bland and boring image.

It allows you to get more of the scene in the image. This is especially useful indoors when you may have a large group and not enough space to back up until everyone is in the photo. Used properly they can also show more of a room without undue distortion.
Outdoors they are great for scenic views. You can also focus as close as possible on, say, an individual leaf and then use f16 to create immense depth of field. You have one large leaf in your foreground and the rest are smaller yet still in focus.
