I think this case defines stupidity in its highest order. It appears that people have totally lost their senses. There is absolutely nothing wrong with hugging. I would pull my kid from any school that would enact that rule and quick. People have to start standing up and speaking out against this kind of threat to personal freedoms or we won't have any left.

The problem lies in the definition of appropriate. It depends on the beholder. I'm not comfortable with a lot of random hugging, being hugged by a stranger or business acquaintance.
I was raised in the deep south, still live here, and expect hugs with relatives, friends, etc as a matter of course. Little children spontaneously hug.
If your children's school is setting guidelines, there is a reason - maybe a parent from a touch-me-not culture, maybe an overzealous principal, maybe a reaction to a creepy event that has occurred.
Best thing for you to do is to raise your own children & don't try to make the world conform to your norms. If only we'd all do that!

It's the decline in family values and morals throughout the country. This is what it's come to. A moratorium on hugging, absolutely not! What has happened to common sense? Since when is hugging to comfort another a bad thing? People have skewed views on what's right and wrong these days and the country has turned upside down. Something must be done to stop the downward spiral and wake people up.

Interesting you should bring this up. I just read a story from the St Louis Today (http://newsletters.stltoday.com) about a young girl who got 2 after school detentions for hugging friends goodbye after school. She had been warned at a football game that it is a public display of affection that is not allowed on school property. (I wonder if the jocks pat each other on the behind, also a display of affection, without being reprimanded?). I think it is outrageous! They should just change to online school so no one has any human contact at all, really! Boy, this is going to far!

I saw that article on the girl getting detention for hugging her friends as a "public display of affection." Pretty damn ridiculous. How about the administration worry about the teachers who are banging their students in the privacy of a rented hotel room? Hugs should ALWAYS be okay (well, as long as there is no groping). Seriously, their rules say public displays of affection reflect poorly on the school, but I think stupid rules like this reflect even more poorly.

Moratorium, I had to look that word up. I agree, it is wrong. Some things I can understand, but when you take away biblical principles, that just crosses the line. Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself Leviticus 19:18 that sould be all that needs to be said.

Don't you just love American moralists they make the world go round and give the rest of civilisation a good laugh, I think they would die of shame here in France when everyone kisses each other. let them keep up the good work there aren't to many laughs around at the moment
