The books are about a substance called "Dust" that the magesterium (church) sees as the source of origional sin that settles on people once their daemon takes on a permanent form. So, they try to "save" the children by cutting away their daemons, which of course leaves them as mindless drones (sheeple) . Lyra, the main character in the book, through out her journey discovers that Dust is not evil but the finest particles of the Universe that comes to those that mature and learn to reason (know good from evil) .

Thus from the way I understand it, Eating the apple wasn't a bad thing,....it was actually a very good thing.

The author of the books is an atheist and it helps to read the books from that point of view to understand exactly what is being said. I think the books helps point out the flaws with "origional sin" type of thinking and the perverted power the "magisterium" can have over people.

Does anyone agree? Thoughts?

and thank you Terra.

Get your own Daemon! Fun! Click the Daemon button at the top after choosing a language. I got a ocelot named Pelagia. Test said I am modest, assertive, responsible, solitary, and humble.

I will watch it and probably get the book.

I enjoy mythical movies anyway, but will be intrigued by the metaphors.

Christians fighting against knowledge or alternative understanding that requires thought and reason isn't new, and doesn't effect my attendance either way.

It is funny to me that the people who consistently rave on about violence in pop culture, went to the theaters in droves, rented who theaters out for their church groups etc.. just to see their savior in some of the most gruesome, bloody, violent scenes ever displayed to the public.

It goes to show that violence, genocide, murder and ethnic cleansing are all bad, unless done by God.

Edit....

Angel, The reason knowing about evil is a good thing is because it helps us make good decisions. Consider Eve. If she had a knowledge of good vs evil, she could have understood that the serpent was lying and that she was being deceived. But she didn't, she didn't know good from bad because she didn't have the knowledge yet. God allowed her to be tempted without the knowledge of good or evil.

Makes you wonder why, and if He required evil to enter the earth doesn't it?

I thought the movie looked cliche, in line with The Seeker and all the others trying to jump on the Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings trend... But now that so many Christians have refused to see it, I'm definitely gonna check it out...
