The books are about a substance called "Dust" that the magesterium (church) sees as the source of origional sin that settles on people once their daemon takes on a permanent form. So, they try to "save" the children by cutting away their daemons, which of course leaves them as mindless drones (sheeple) . Lyra, the main character in the book, through out her journey discovers that Dust is not evil but the finest particles of the Universe that comes to those that mature and learn to reason (know good from evil) .
Thus from the way I understand it, Eating the apple wasn't a bad thing,....it was actually a very good thing.
The author of the books is an atheist and it helps to read the books from that point of view to understand exactly what is being said. I think the books helps point out the flaws with "origional sin" type of thinking and the perverted power the "magisterium" can have over people.
Does anyone agree? Thoughts?
and thank you Terra.

Get your own Daemon! Fun! Click the Daemon button at the top after choosing a language. I got a ocelot named Pelagia. Test said I am modest, assertive, responsible, solitary, and humble.
