Nothing really if you think about it. A cult is deemed that simply because it not what our society or culture thinks is 'normal' or 'acceptable'. But what's normal to one may not be to another. Christians could say Buddhism is a cult because their views of 'normal' differ. All religions start somewhere and usually as a branch or sect of another religion. They will have beliefs that differ from the 'norm', and will be labeled a cult or heretics until they gain enough support or members. All religions today started somewhere, and who's to say they aren't still cults?

I dont think there is a lot of difference. I suppose it is one of intensity of belief. With most religions you can sort of belong to it but not really participate but I think with a cult you would have to belong and take an active role

agree with captain cod
*my* faith is a religion, *your* faith is a cult.
I once spent a very annoying week arguing with a Mormon about whether Mormonism was a cult or a religion... he was quoting one lot of dictionary definitions. I was quoting a different lot dictionary definitions.. at the end of the day we had to agree to disagree, because it all comes down to personal interpretation of words

No difference at all. A religion generally has more members and for some reason is more socially acceptable.

How they are perceived by society.
Religions tend to be seen as (fairly) OK.
Cults perceived to be subversive/dangerous
I see little real difference except that cults have far fewer members.
The following of any interest?

Cults take people's money and brainwashes them into believing that anyone who doesn't do what the leader tells them is worthless and they'll be worthless if they leave.
Religion...um...Not much difference really is there?
And Happy Birthday.
