But, if we were all just a cosmic accident and are all here by chance and when we die nothing happens then whats the point of being here. If you really stop an think about it that would'nt make any type of sense. I mean if thats the case why go to work, why not just run around all day doing whatever you want ( some people do lol) and not have to suffer any back lash. Im not saying people have to believe in God thats your choice but, just think about it

Who says life HAS to have a point, apart from whatever do you decide to make of it?

And in theory you might be right that, if there's no Invisible Sky Daddy watching you, you are free to do whatever you want. But in practice, we have this thing called the "social contract" -- I agree not to harm you or do bad things to you, with the understanding that you won't try to do evil to me, so that we can all get along and not be at each others' throats. That's just being practical.

Besides -- are you telling us the only reason YOU are good is because you're afraid of punishment, or expecting some kind of reward? That's not moral behavior -- you're just sucking up!

Well, by the same token, if there is a God, then what's the point of being here?

Just because there's a God doesn't mean there is an afterlife. You believe in God and an afterlife. One does not require the other, however.

Also, whether there is a God or not, can you remember a "beforelife?" Our lives started years ago, and humanity has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. The universe has been around for billions of years. We weren't there then, or at least we have no recollections of being anywhere then. So, why isn't the afterlife just the same as the beforelife?

And another thing - just because there is a God, does that mean we have a purpose for being here? Most people say "God has a plan" and all that - but what's the plan? The thing is, most people who believe in God say that since there is a God there is a purpose - but I've never heard anyone suggest what that purpose is. Heck, maybe God just created us without any purpose.

If there is a point to life, who says there has to be someone controlling it all? And who says you have to revolve your life around worshiping something that has never presented it's self to you.

I work so I can get money. So that on the weekend I can afford to run around and have a good time. So that I can afford a nice apartment and food and wine and the things that I like.

Think about it, if there really was an all powerful, all knowing god who was everywhere you wouldn't have to work because it would give you everything you needed.

If you want to believe in god, its your choice, but just think about it.

It makes perfect sense, and it is not "chance", it is called science and evolution. I have thought about it, it was only after a lot of research that I turned away from my catholic faith. What is the reason for any life on earth? To live. Is there a reason for the ostrich? the bear? the sloth? No, there is no greater purpose, only life.
I live my life to the fullest extent possible because I know that one day it will all be gone. I am a good person because I choose to be, not because I fear hell and am trying to buy my way into heaven.

Life is what you make of it. For me there are plenty of reasons to enjoy life even if there is no designed purpose for it. My relationships with friends and family, enjoyment of nature, playing with my dog, feasting with family, my garden, learning, meaningful career, volunteer work, trying to be part of making the world a bit better for self and others, raising a family, reading a good book, etc...

If your saying there is no reason not to go around doing drugs, stealing, having meaningless serial sex (yes, some people do) then I would say that there are reasons to choose not to live like that even if there is no inherent purpose in life besides what we give it ourselves. For many people living like that leads to addiction, broken relationships, stds, loneliness, bankruptcy, etc... There are still consequences in life even if religion is false. Who wants to go through life addicted to drugs or end up alone because they were too selfish to put the energy and sacrifice into forming real relationships? I am lucky in that I find my work fulfilling but I'd still go for providing for my loved ones and the added quality of life that money can sometimes bring even if I didn't. I don't think I'd like living on the street as a homeless person or on welfare even if there is no God.

I don't believe there is a God - that is, I don't believe in 'God' as portrayed in the Old Testament or the Koran.

At the risk of being denounced as a heretic by those who do, I would say IMO this construct of a God was invented by an Establishment of Men to justify their actions and their power.

Of course if people do believe in God, I have no right to judge or persecute them, but I have my own ideas of trying to make sense of the Universe, and a male, autocratic celestial ruler doesn't come into them.

People may believe that there is some mysterious force, that regulates the universe, and makes it function as a unit. They just may not believe in the defintion of God, as traditional religions define him. A lot of people are too materialistic and indulging, to be intuitive enough, to sense the presents of the spiritual. Others just don't think about it.

There does not have to be a point in our existence, just to live our lives. It doesn't make sense to you as a believer because you start the question assuming we serve a purpose. The reason a person would want to work would be to supply us with temporary happiness by filling our life with stuff occupying our time. Also necessities cost money to reduce personal pain you would still work, to not feel hunger to get medical attention when injured shelter etc. P.S. this is how it was explained to me

The government is your new god. You can't do anything you want under them right?

But anyway, Life is just fun. If you have to much fun and get aids or lose your job and, as a result, become poor or whatever, then the fun ends. That's enough reason to keep going to work and being responsible.

Besides, you don't need an imaginary God to tell you how to enjoy your life.

That's right - there's no point in being here. Suck it up and get used to it.

"If you really stop an think about it that would'nt make any type of sense."

You mean: YOU don't like the implications. Tough - that's how it is. You think the universe owes you a grand purpose?
