I am currently trying to house train my puppy and one of the confusing aspects is what to do when you catch your puppy in the act of peeing inside. Some say to scold the puppy and make it a big deal. Others say that scolding will only make it worse. What is, in your opinon, the best thing to do if you catch your puppy in the act of peeing inside? Some say I should pick her up and rush her outside but that would involve putting on my shoes and coat, and by then she's already well finished. Thanks for your help.

She's currently being crate trained but is a 4 month old Pug. The problem is when she's outside the crate. She's a bit unpredictable when she goes. You'll just suddenly see her squat and the process of squating and peeing is like 2 seconds.

Sorry, I should say though the process of her going is very unpredictable I can still catch her directly in the act but it's too quick to be able to grab her and take her out before she lets loose.

Pick her up and take her to a place that it is OK to pee in. Scolding will not make a difference other than teaching her to go where you can't find her doing it. Dogs don't connect your scolding to peeing IN the house, they connect it to peeing. Put her on a schedule and give her TONS of praise for going outside.

not a big deal, but do pick her up and take her out (even if you just go to the door and place her outside it, she'll get it). say something like "oops - outside" (calmly) while picking her up. timing is key - you must catch her right at the first second she starts (or even before she starts but is just starting to squat). Age also helps - a 2 month old puppy is harder to catch quickly than a 4 month old (they tend to start peeing before they even squat all the way). good luck.
no punishment after the fact (this means even 5 seconds after - too late).
EDIT: I should say, no "correction" after the fact. do not even draw attention to it - just clean it up and vow to supervise more closely next time.

Get A Treat (That Humans Can Eat) And Make Your Dog Smell What He/She Has Done Then Eat The Treat. Then If You See Puppy Go Outside Give Puppy The Treat. Puppy Will Catch On Fast, I Go Outside I Get Treat!I Go Inside Owner Gets Treat!

If you crate train you dog is it less likely you will catch them in the act. They won't pee and poop were they sleep, most times. So I suggest crate training. I used this method for my Pekingese and he is in love with his crate now...sleeps in it, plays in it, hides things in it....no damage done...to him, me or the rug! Hope this helped!

When you catch them in the act, you clap your hands or yell AHHHHHHHHHHH and they'll HOPEFULLY stop and you scoop them up and tell them Pee pee outside.. in a disgusted tone.. When they go, then you tell them they are Good !
