My son is wanting to join the army and wondered if you joined up as a regular, if he had the potential/apptitude or whatever could he go on to be an officer? Or in order to be an officer would he have to go down the Sandhurst route from the outset?
His grades from school aren't fantastic, certainly not university material. Any sensible advice greatly appreciated.

My husband was the same not great grades at school, don't think he was interested lol But he has always had excellent reports and commendations in his job with the army (hes a royal engineer with para sqn), he went through the ranks and was earlier this year promoted to an officer. So yes you're son could definitely make it if he had the potential too. Will add my husband is a non commissioned officer, he will have to apply further in his career for a commission.

I'm in the same position as him, I want to join the Army as a Commissioned Officer but my grades aren't exactly perfect- I'm in college now studying public services at national diploma which counts as three A-levels and focuses on skills to do with the Army and many of the other public services.
If i get those grades I'll try for sandhurst, if do not get those grades i believe there are many universities for people who are wanting to become officers can study at different universities/colleges around the country and would try for one of those- I'm not too clear with that information though.
He can progress through the ranks through the years as an NCO then later on recommendation become and officer, NCOs are given near enough the same responsibilities as Officers- NCOs can progress as far to become a pilot at Corporal on recommendation and passing further medicals and aptitude tests.
Good luck to him.

Your son must take the test for commission as an officer in the armed forces. Even if the grades are not good, as long as the test could be passed and the applicant is physically fit.
