Unless they mix the steroid with a long acting Novacaine, it will hurt worse for the first 2-3 days. Then the anti-inflammatory effect of the steroid will take effect. Apply ice, take it easy and perhaps some Tylenol. The effect of the Novacaine is almost immediate, but if it was not mixed with the steroid, you might get the delay I talked about.

cortisone shots actually damage the tendons and ligaments over time!
You need to get prolotherapy! It is like a cortisone shot, except that the solution causes the tendons and ligaments to heal over time! It kickstarts your body to heal that area again. The reason people have injuries they never heal is because the immune system sees joint injuries as secondary! The main function of the immune system is to keep the body living, and joint injuries do not require immediate attention. There are other causes for this, but the immune system is the biggest.
Prolotherapy is NOT a quick fix! The cortisone shots are supposed to take the pain away immediately because it is a very very strong anti-inflammatory. Cortisone does NOT heal your joint in any way! It only takes the pain away. The pain is taken away, and you can start moving it more. Without pain, your body cant tell you when you are hurting the joint. When that cortisone wears off, you will have more pain then before. Most people then continue getting the cortisone shots, becoming more frequent and stronger dose over time since all they are doing is tearing up their joints more and more!
The prolotherapy solution will take away your pain for the first week or two due to the anesthetic in the solution. The ligaments and tendons will heal over a course of 4-6 weeks. You keep going until all your pain is gone. In most cases if your injury is severe, you may not notice results in the first treatment or two because the joint needs to stengthen up before pain can start to be eliminated.

If you are interested, i will answer more questions if you want to email me. I have a very severe rotator cuff injury that is healing quite well with prolotherapy. I had both shoulders, both elbows, and my right wrist treated so far, and after three treatments, all are healed except my right shoulder that was very severe. I feel that i will only need 2 more treatments to my right shoulder before everythign is completely healed.

I believe they can actually take up to two weeks to take their full effect. You will also experience pain at the injection site for 1-3 days afterwards, so take pain medication and put ice on the area.
I had cortisone injections in my cervical spine and they did not help, however, I had them in my shoulders, and after about 4 days I was pain free. Good luck and not to worry!

No it should work within 1-2 hours. I got one in my hip and it resolved the pain for a good bit but didn't take that long.

The injections don't work the same for everyone. Sometimes they relieve pain for months and sometimes not at all. My doc explained to me the reason they try these is to see if surgery is needed.
