The secrets of Assyria's success was it's excellent army. All adult males coud be called up for millitary service, and Assyrian kings could put fifthy thousand warriors into battle. Soldiers were divided into squads of ten; twenty squads made up a company. The infantry consisted mainly on spearmen and archers, who fired deadly iron-tipped arrows.Slings and swords were also used. The widespead use of iron in their wepons gave them an advantage over there enemies, who mostly relied on bronze

Assyrians used fast moving, two wheeled chariots, which created gaps and chaos in the enemy's ranks, with the speed and weight of their assult. Backing up the chariots was the cavalry, a small but elite group of noble horsemen. the Assyrians were also experts in seige craft- using huge iron-headed battering rams to bring down walls, and mobile wooden towers so archers could fire into walled cities.

It was th organizaton, disipline, and versatility of the Assyrian army that made it so powerful and awe-inspiring in battle.
