Apparently it was when he decided to come to earth in human form and sacrifice himself to himself to appease himself.

This story about God being vengeful comes from those who have not experienced Him. Man can write about anything... we must not be manipulated by these things.
The Universe eternally maintains its existence and moves in harmony because it is supported by laws, called the Universal Laws. When, by any selfish will of man for instance, any of these laws are violated, this balance is disrupted. But, there is this Law of Karma or Justice that comes to the rescue to put back what went wrong into its former state of order and harmony.
It is man's fault, humanity's faulty system that has plunged us all into this chaos that we are now suffering from.

The image of God has been improved over time. We need to continue to improve our image of God, so we will tune in better with this universal spirit that holds the universe together as one. Our God, is a good and very moral God, who will treat people well, who contribute positively to making this world a better place in the future. God is less concerned with beliefs, since you can not contribute positively to this world, if you are out of tune with the universe. God will give rough lessons to those who contribute negatively to this world.

If you ever read the Bible, you'll see that most of the time God got pissed at folk for doing something stupid. I think more than anything, God just hated dumb @sses.
EDIT:
I don't think the worship of other Gods is stupid, so let me be clear about that, I'm only saying God typically dealt harshly with it as far as the Jewish people were concerned. The "doing something stupid" was referring to other things like with what happened to Jonah or Moses's sister because I do not criticize anyone for their religious beliefs.

When you start reading the new testament. (1 John 4:8-9) 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
and (1 John 4:16) God is love. Whoever lives in love, lives in God, and God in him.

It seems a person named Jesus, who claimed to be God's son, went about preaching God is love.
If you have a hard time accepting that idea, perhaps you don't know what love is.
Do not think of the shmaltzy, fuzzy romantic love.
That is not what is meant.
On occasion, love is tough.

If someone tortured you for centuries, wouldn't you start saying nice things about them, hoping they'd stop?

"God is love" is a doctrine adopted by pious Christians and terrified atheists.
Actually the scriptures define God much more frequently as "holy" and "just".
Reject Him at your own peril.
