A shot is 1.5 oz of liquor, normally served in a small glass. The person who drinks it is said to be "taking a shot" and generally drinks it as quickly as possible, rather than sipping it.

a 'shot' in australia usually 30ml of either spirits or liqueurs served in a shot glass or 'shooter'.
ie a vodka shot would be 30ml vodka, served straight, with no mixer, in a 30ml (standard size) shot glass.
you wouldn't have a shot of beer, that would be pointless as you'd be there all night filling up your shot glass with another mouthful of beer. you'd have a shot of something with a higher volume of alcohol.
a cocktail is basically a mixed alcoholic drink. there are thousands of recipe's for different cocktails.
bar courses can take around a year to complete if you do a full course, so there is no way anyone is going to tell you everything you need to know to be a barmen via y!a. most people just wing it anyway, if you're just going to be working in a pub and not a high class establishment.

Ok, seeing as you aked about V.B I'm guessing you are Australian. A shot is 30mL, and you only have shots of spirits (not beer or wine).
To legally serve alcohol in Australia, you have to have completed an R.S.A (Responsible Service of Alcohol) course and received your certificate. This usually costs around $70. Most companies who run these RSA courses also run a barskills course, where you learn about shots, cocktails, wine and beer, as well as how much is a shot, how to mix drinks etc.
You can find out most stuff about cocktails from:
http://supercocktails.com/
They give oyu recipes and instuctions how to make them, but there may be some technical stuff you don't understand, so just google any of those for a definition/ explanation.

Like the above answer, a shot is served in a small 1.5 ounce glass. You are able to buy shot glasses in most department stores or accessory shops. Shots are normally drunk in a count of 3 seconds and people normally take them by one go. If you want to be a bartender, it is customary to treat a customer who has been sitting on the bar for a while (and who has been talking to you) with a complimentary shot.
Popular shots include tequila (where you need to first dip the shot glass in salt, then pour tequila and add a lemon). People drink the shot, then squeeze their teeth on the lemon; the salt is necessary in order to remain on normal blood pressure levels.
Another popular shot is vodka shots, which are pretty much just vodka, some add vodka and cranberry in a mixer and then pour into the shot glasses. Another popular shot to take is absinthe (or there's a shot called Traffic Lights, which contains Cranberry, Absinthe and Yellow Curacao). Absinthe may be prohibited in your state, so you need to check first. However, you normally melt one teaspoon of sugar in the shot glass after pouring in Absinthe, and you give the drinker a glass of water to down after they drank the Absinthe shot.
Cocktails need to be shaken or stirred, or are prepared using a blender. The cocktails using a blender are called Daiquiris, and the popular ones using the shaker, are Cosmos (Cosmopolitan), Martinis (Appletini, Dry, Dry & Dirty, etc.) and so forth.
If you need more information. Try www.drinksmixer.com, or try to google for bartending guide. You can find plenty of bartending handbooks and guides if you try amazon.com or your local bookshop.
Good luck!

I shot is the amount you can fit in a shot glass. When making a drink with a shot it in you can either measure it out in a shot glass or jigger or use the counting method. Usually a count to 4 is a shot.
Many people take bartending classes, but if you just want to work at a neighborhood bar try getting Bartending for Dummies.

A shot is a drink which is about one and a half ounces. This varies on the size. It is highly alcoholic. Sometimes it's straight liquor, as in a shot of vodka, a shot of tequila. Sometimes it's a mixed drink but usally those are just liquors mixed. Typical shots have the same alcohol content as any other drink, one beer, one glass of wine.

If you don't know what a shot is you have a ways to go. You put shors in all mixed drinks or you can just drink the shot straight.
