I agree that Frontline is a good product for the control and prevention of fleas and ticks. My personal favorite is Advantix - It is used the same way in regards to being applied between the shoulder blades. The great thing about Advantix is that it is a contact repellent. Fleas and ticks do not have to bite for this product to work unlike Frontline. Since it is a contact repellent - (same concept as the mosquito repellent we use) - Fleas and ticks do not want to come near your dog. It also works on mosquitoes :) DO not bath your dog 2 days prior or 2 days after you have applied the topical flea and tick preventions though. The product will work better because the natural oils in the skin will help to distribute the medication more evenly thus making it more effective. As for shampoo, flea and tick shampoos are very drying. Do not use a baby or human shampoo. A humans PH is completely different from a canines. Your simple baby shampoo will also cause drying because it is formulated for a baby - not a dog. You can get a good Aloe and Oatmeal shampoo at any pet supply store. No need for conditioner but with a Shih-Tzu , you may want to pick up a leave in spray de-tangler. It has moisturizers in it and will help you and that pooch when you are brushing the hair. Brushing every other day will help keep the coat sleek and shiny as the natural oils are distributed through the dogs coat.

There are many type of tick & flea shampoo available in the market. Most of the shampoo quit effective,if you know how to use. Some owner claim their dog coat loosing its conditioning after using the shampoo. Try apply sufficient amount of conditioner after the shampooing and you see the difference. To have a soft & silky coat is not only the shampoo but suitable type of food, supplement and grooming.

Shampoo will not prevent fleas. Flea shampoo will kill the fleas on the dog then and there. To prevent fleas, you need to use Advantix, Advantage, Frontline...

As far as keeping the coat soft and silky, just use a conditioner after the shampoo. And keep the coat brushed and combed.

If you want to remove and/or prevent tick and flea infestation, you may want to try Frontline Plus or Frontline Topspot. It's effective for my shih tzu and convenient for me since I only have to apply it topically once a month in between my dog's shoulder blades. Maybe you can ask your dog's vet about it or look it up on and order through the internet.

As for the shampoo, maybe you can try one of the various TROY line of shampoo. I use Troy Rascar Medicated shampoo for my dog as an added protection against mange. You can also try Mane and Tail if soft and silky hair is what you really like.

None. Not for fleas and ticks anyway - no flea shampoo works. Ask a groomer whats good to keep hair shiny (I think a daily tablespoon of cod liver oil is supposed to be good) but as for the fleas, you need to get a proper treament from a vets, like Frontline or Revolution.
