If you stand close to your subject, the lighting will be very harsh with direct flash. For example a person will have a brilliant white forehead from the intense flash.

Also if you use a very wide angle lens, there will be a white pool of light in the center as the light will not spread evenly to the sides.

A way to overcome this is to use a diffuser to soften the light and avoid the light "blowing highlights" or a pool of light in the middle.

To soften the light, thus eliminating or reducing harsh shadows or strong highlights. It gives a much nicer, less direct light that "wraps" around people and looks a bit more natural.

Use a diffuser if and when bounce flash isn't possible. Sto-Fen (stofen.com) offers a complete line. With a little work you can make your own.
