As homeopathic treatments are not tested using scientific method, and are instead reported, in most cases, using anecdotal information... I would prefer to have treatments known to be appropriate for my condition.
Your question, however, shows some ignorance of orthodox medicine...as for influenza, antibiotics and painkillers would both be inappropriate prescriptions. For viral illnesses, such as influenza, you treat with either, antivirals (if caught in the appropriate window) or symptomatically (just as they would using homeopathic medicine). However, the best treatment for influenza is prevention with the flu vaccine.

Does acupuncture still come under the heading of alternative medicine? If so, yes, I would put some faith in it and I am considering trying it for a particular ailment (haven't yet). I've read and heard a lot of positive results from it. Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm a firm believer in "mind over matter", and I do believe in the power of placebos. But right now, the only thing I need medication for is high blood pressure and I am afraid to take any chance with that as far as not following my physician's advice and taking the meds he prescribes.

The best way forward is to use a combination of both. To take the example that you offered of Flu. Treating viral infections is difficult because viruses live inside the body’s own cells, making it hard for our immune system to fight back. Viruses can also mutate, causing treatments that might work today, unusable for the future. Influenza is caused by a virus which attacks our body's cells, resulting in various effects depending on the strain of the virus. The virus mutates all the time and new variations (strains) arise. Unfortunately immunity against one strain (which is conferred by exposure or immunisation) does not protect against other strains. In the era of rapid air transport the worldwide spread of a new type of influenza can be extremely fast. Until recently there was no specific treatment for influenza, and for most people it is still best to treat the symptoms in the old fashioned way, Stay at home. Drink plenty of fluids. Take symptom relief with - paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory drugs to help with fever and aches and pains, decongestants, cough medicines, gargles, lozenges etc., Await natural recovery. Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of healing, suitable for everyone, young and old. Homeopathy focuses on you as an individual, concentrating on treating your specific physical and emotional symptoms, to give long lasting benefits. The therapy is based on the theory of treating “like with like”. Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted natural substances that if given in stronger doses to a healthy person, would produce the symptoms the medicine is prescribed for. In the assessment of you, the patient, homeopaths will take into account the range of physical, emotional and lifestyle factors in order to prescribe the right medicine(s). As I stated at the beginning, homeopathy can be safely used alongside most conventional medicines.
Hope this helps

Personally if I'm ill I'd rather be seen by someone who has had years of recognised professional training and daily experience of dealing with patients - a doctor. Yes I know some can be a bit free with the anti-biotics but I can't see how that makes anything worse long term. I'm currently half way through a course of anti-biotics (first in years) for a throat and chest infection. I feel considerably better than I did 2 days ago and I certainly would not have had the energy or inclination to discuss diet and dreams with anyone!

If I wanted to stand a chance that the therapy would help me I would have no choice but to use orthodox medicine.
Now that homeopathy and acupuncture have pretty much been proven to have no more that a placebo effect it continues to astonish me that people are still so gullible as to believe it they do anything!

I tend to find exercise followed by a herbal tea and a soak in a bath then sleeping is the way forward!
I hate taking orthodox tablets too many side affects. What can go wrong with eating well, drinking well, exercise and relaxation?
