You can buy a checker from jefferspets.com that checks the dogs temperature from the ear

The best way is rectally thee are ear thermometers but they need to be used properly for an accurate reading.. You never want to stick anything down in a dogs ears, one could easily puncture the inside of the dogs ears or eardrum. When taken rectally you will need to use a lubricant on the thermometer and be sure the thermometer states it can be used for rectal use. A dogs normal temperature will range between 100.5 to 102.5.

We've actually tried using aural thermometers on dogs, and the results are far from accurate. In people, they work by measuring heat radiated from the tympanic membrane (ear drum). In dogs, due to the different shape of the ear canal, you can't get the probe anywhere near close enough to get an accurate reading.

In any case, most dogs hate having things poked down their ears even more than they hate having a rectal temperature taken. Look at it from the vet's point of view...the bum end doesn't bite!!

Yes, but it takes a special thermometer to do that.

I have never seen it done in the ear at either clinic I have worked at. I don't think they can do it that way, but I'm not a vet, so I don't know.

The temperature needs to be taken rectally by someone who knows what they are doing.
