would appreciate any feedback about traffic, best time, best day of week to go to have the smoothest, easiest drive. Are there any areas of mountain ranges to drive through or anything else? How long should it take to get from L.A. to the Oregon border?

I use to live there & had family in L.A. so I have driven it offten. I would take the 5 to 299 west that is at Redding. To the 101 up the coast. It is sooooo AWSOME!! Breath taking!!!!!

You're going to go right over Mt. Ashland. It's pretty steep, better make sure you have studded tires and or chains. I have the funniest story for you: My husband and I were traveling from Modesto to Oregon quite a few years ago. When we got over the border in Ashland it was late at night. We stopped at a gas station and were talking and this guy came to the window and just looked at us. I whispered to my husband "There's this weirdo looking at us, what do you think he wants"? Hubby rolls down the window and asks in a loud and threatening voice "Can I help you"? The weirdo asks back "What can I do for you"? This conversation goes on for quite a while. Turns out we were total idiots, he was the gas attendant and it is illegal for customers to pump their own gas in Oregon. He seen our license plates were from California and I know he said to himself that we were total morons. Don't make this mistake on your trip, you can not pump your own gas anywhere in the state of Oregon.

Once you get over the Grapevine and out of LA it will be smooth sailing. Maybe 15 plus hours.

Be ready for any weather, especially fog. There have been a couple of cool car wrecks on that street recently because of the fog.
