I run usually 5 days a week for 50 minutes, I feel relatively comfortable throughout the run except for a steepish hill but other than that I fell fine. I was told that when you are running you need to be feeling tired and you need to be pushing yourself constantly harder and harder to lose weight is this correct? should I be pushing myself harder?

If you are running for general cardiovascular conditioning and to burn calories then it doesn't matter if you feel tired or not.

Unless you are training to race you do not need to push yourself and feel tired or winded.

You do not have to push yourself, you should enjoy yourself, run so that you can talk.
You are into maintenance so you have conditioned your muscles to this pace and that is fine.

You type of running is not necessary to stress yourself.

The most important thing is to enjoy your runs. That can mean running harder and improving your time or taking it easy and relaxing.

If you enjoy your exercise more, you will tend to keep at it and not stop doing it.

Two other suggestions...

1) Try to mix it up a bit...doing the same run every day can get boring.

2) If you really want to master that "steepish" hill, do some hill repeats. pick a steep hill....run up...walk/jog down...repeat several times. Works wonders.

Keep it easy and comfortable. Sounds like you have an ideal routine that works for you, so don't worry about what others say.

Only suggestion I have is to make it a full hour. The body runs on muscle sugar (glycogen) for about half an hour before it starts to burn fat for primary fuel (provided you are running aerobically). If you can carry on a conversation as you run, you are running aerobically.

For the hill, take shorter choppier steps, work just as hard as you did on flat, no harder, lean slightly forward, and you'll be at top in no time.

It's a good idea to question your routine from time to time, but I think the concensus is that you're doing great, so why fix what ain't broke???

If you are not winded then you are not running hard enough.

Try sprinting for 20 yards, jog for 50 yards, sprint for 20 etc etc.

This will build your speed, burn calories and make you stronger.
