I don't want to have to lug all my personal belongings all over creation and I want to know what's the cheapest and safest way to get my things back, in particular I'm worried about electronics such as my laptop.

Also, what's better overall FED-Ex or the postal service?

Thank you in advance

Also, can I mail just a Pelican case or does it have to be in a cardboard box

Not sure what you need to bring back, but for the past 2 deployments (and I am sure this one too that he just left for), my husband tries to sell to his replacements what he can (TV, microwave, game systems, etc), and mail home the rest in tough boxes. Keep your laptop on you. My husband purchased a laptop case with hard sides from a haji shop on his FOB and he was able to have a carry on so that was it. I have no idea what it costs to ship for him, but he brings back all the trinkets that I sent him, plus goodies for us! So that is how it comes home. Hope that helps! Take care!

I was a mailman and the deployed troops would send things home by the mail. Usually they were sent in large plastic bins with covers and were sealed.I would either carry your laptop as carry on, or get a couple of rolls of bubble wrap and wrap the heck out of it.Put it in the middle and pack soft items around it.If you have a pelican case. Pack it in that and then put it in another box with your other items.Get insurance if possible. I hate to say this but packages really get bounced around.I believe the Grey bins I mentioned weighted about 80lbs when packed. Double check on maximum weight though. You might also try USPS.com for information on shipping. They also have a toll free number if you have access to a phone.

P.S Thanks for serving your country.

Not sure what falls under the classification of "Personal Gear" but all boxes being shipped from Iraq are inspected for any prohibited objects, such as weapons, drugs loot etc...etc...

If you're attached to the State Dept, use one of the daily mail services (you can send packages as if you were mailing them in the U.S.). If attached to the Dept of Defense, use the daily post and send it through the APO/FPO.

Whichever way you do it, make sure that your pack it well so nothing breaks, and ensure that there's no contraband in it. Whoever receives the package will have to pay customs on the contents.
