The ultimate question. Unfortunatly no answer. You have to find your own reasons, wether it be from your religion, or from constructing your own view of the universe. It may be to make the planet better for the next generation (your kids), you may want to leave your mark by being famous...
The thing that has always confused me, is those that answer this question with: "the reason to live is to be good and get to heaven (or equivalent afterlife)" But then what is the purpose of that afterlife? It's almost a whole new question, but now phrased as "What is the purpose of 'living' in an afterlife?"

You were placed here to recognize your divinity. And to better comprehend what Eternity is, you must live a life believing that you are destined to die. You are a created being which cannot be destroyed, not even upon death. You have also been placed hereto understand who YOU are. To draw closer to your own self. For this "self" is indestructable. But it can be molded in different ways by you. You are the creator of yourself. You are a powerful and strong, being who will find that the worth of living, is to be found in what you take with you when you leave here. And what you take with you, is the happiness you create--CREATE!--for yourself right here in this short life. It is but a twinkling of an eye here on earth. Waste not a single moment here. Each moment in time youspend here is precious--PRECIOUS! For time does not not exist in the next world, only Eternity. Each night, when you go to bed, thank yourself for being here, for it is you yourself who has arranged this journey to Earth. This was your own decision of free will. You came here to learn how to be happy, so that you could remain happy when you leave here and enter the Eternal State. And why have you done this? Because you have loved yourself enough to do it. Be proud on the brave journey called life. Few have had the courage you have to dare come here. And your reward will be great, not only "over there"--but right here--right now--if you recognizethe magnificence of your wonderous being. No greater messege can I give than this.."You are loved."

As you said I believe our lives is only to serve God and bring glory to his name, by freely giving ourselves to him. Thats were God gets the glory, when we serve him freely and put him first in our lives, like when we love our neighbor as ourselves. That is rising above our own desires and giving to others out of love which is exactly what Jesus Christ did for us. The makes God happy because he created us in his image, We definitely will have a blessed life when we put Christ first. No doubt about it.

Are you looking for happiness? Then live in the moment, neither worry about the past of the future
Looking for meaning? Only live in the past and future, for it is only through pain and worry and suffering that great deeds are accomplished "Suck the marrow out of the bone of life"-Emerson

Everyone has their own individual purpose. If are asking the purpose of the human race? Why must the human race have a purpose. We live, we reproduce, we evolve, we die, we become extinct, we have no other purpose than that. Live with it.

There is no purpose. I don't get why everyone thinks their is.
And for those whose purpose is to serve God, I feel bad for you if your only purpose is to be a slave to an imaginary god thereby wasting the only life you get.

I've seen that people normally tend to avoid this question. That's because they don't like to face reality.
Everything in life that we do has a purpose. We go to school for a purpose, we eat and drink for a purpose, we wear clothes for a purpose. Just think about your life, every single thing you do has a purpose. Even a drug addict has a purpose! Then, how come your existence and entire life itself has no purpose??
The Holy Qur'an says :
"..Man has been created to worship God(Allah).."
Our purpose is to worship the Almighty Creator, who is One without partners.
