Honza....were you in the Vietnam draft Army?....I was.....All the things you state did not occur in any significant degree.
In fact we had a better Army during the draft.
I not only believe that a draft Army would be good for America; I believe all young people once they graduate or leave high school should serve two years government service. I can be in the military or in the Park Service....or in a Veterans Hospital....the Peace Corps....or Vista.....a host of public service organizations.
This would serve several purposes. FIRST Obviously it would improve all of these programs for the general benefit. SECOND it would teach the young people to appreciate how lucky they are to be born in America THIRD The young people would be exposed to new challenges and responsibilities.
In addition we could restructure the military into a two tier organization. Tier one would be the all volunteer professional soldier. These troops would train 24/7 and be in the peak of condition, ready for action around the world. The second tier would be a much more relaxed organization which would perform all housekeeping services. These troops would be more civilian than military. Because they were just glorified janitors they would not need much rank or promotions.
Yes, I think there should be a BIG draft.....and no one would be excused. It would save money not waste it.

Yes it would be a complete waste of money. Here in UK, what you in the USA would call "The Draft" is called "Conscription", which would mean every able bodied man and possibly woman, from the age of 18 would be called up to do about two years of military service.
There are people here in UK who think hat somehow if we were to reintroduce what used to be called "National Service" than it would put some 'back-bone' into the youth of our country.
It would do nothing of the sort.
I'm a former professional soldier of the British Army, 1957-1965. The Army could not wait to see the back of National Service and return to it's traditional roots of being very small and very professional.
The British Army of today is about the same size it had been back in 1815 when we fought the Battle of Waterloo.
Traditionally the British have always fought wars along side allies.
I might just add that there is absolutely no way what ever that we the British could have gone into Normandy in 1944 on our own. Had the Americans not joined and taken command of a very bad situation, then we may have had to wait until about 1949.
It's just history now, but in on Sunday we will remember our war dead and the Queen will lead the Nation at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.
In World War One, my grandfather ran with his Welsh regiment and charged through the ranks of the front line German army. It was only then that we British came to understand the awesome size of that army. The British had about 80,000 troops at the battle front, while the Germans had 2,000,000. No wonder then that the Keiser [Bill] called our army, "that little contemptable army". The British Army in Flanders then was known as the Old Contemptables.
There are now about 27 suviving veterans (Tommies) of the Great War (World War One) here in UK.

lets start with the fact that you feed more soldiers. you have less ammo per a soldier to train. you have to give a soldier a weapon.. that costs bucks.
a conscript is not working and producing money and taxes.
a conscript is lower rating in miilitary skills when compared to a proffesional.
conscripts do have lower morale they dessert, they surrender ...
conscripts are not able to manage to learn all the features of advanced weapon systems in their one-year service.
Conscripts tend to fraud the militarz property.
