hi, i just turned 18 last month and i want a big tattoo going down both of my arms, it's going to be in arabic lol, it's nothing bad. it's just a tattoo.

i'm also planning to go to college for criminal justice after i graduate, and work up as private investigator or something. and i'm going to start off as a police officer probably, do you think the police department will descriminate me because of tattoos? i mean isn't there a law saying just because someone has tattoo then you can't stop hiring them? because isn't that against the freedom thing in the commendment or something? lol sorry, i forgot everything i've learned in 9th grade about those amendment and freedom stuff, etc.

but yeah anyways, do you think so? you think they won't hire me because of tattoos? because isn't that against the law? so yeah will they still hire me if i have tattoos on my arms? big ones.

Yeah i would recomend you dont get the tatoo. Most departments dont like tattoos visible below the sleeve. If you havent got it then dont do it. Maybe get it somewhere else. Law enforcement is a competition. They can always pick the candidate with no tattoos over you.

I have spoken with a lot of officers and they have always told me to major in something else. The reason for that is criminal justice is a very limited subject. You cant do much with it except law enforcement. If your hurt as a cop and cant be an officer anymore or if you just dont make it, its always good to have something to fall back on.

I am Female and have tattoos, I have been told at several jobs that they either had to be covered or I couldn't have the job.
That ment Long sleeves in the summer for example and covered anytime the public and I came in contact.
Also take into consideration that a tattoo is permanent. Is what your planning on getting something appropriate for you at , lets say 50-60-70 years old? will you feel the same about it as your walking down the isle someday with your bride. Will this tattoo interfere with other things you want to do in life. These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself before considering getting a tattoo.
the fact that your questioning it here, tells me that you are not ready to get a permanent tattoo.

You are not going to be hired. Oh, they'll let you apply and run you through the tests, but you will fail one or more of them, probably the psychological exam and the oral interview.

The discrimination laws you are talking about haven't gotten to the point of protecting some idiots tattoos.

Hiring new officers is a serious commitment for the department and the city. Lots of money will be spent on training and equipping that new officer. They are going to hire someone who is serious about the career choice. Wearing tattoos so large that you look like a freak does nothing to convince anyone you are serious about the job or worthy to wear a badge.

If your tattoos can be covered by wearing a long sleeve shirt, you may get hired. You will probibly be ordered to wear a long sleeve shirt ALL the time, while on duty. If you live in an area where it doesn't get very hot during the year, you may survive. wearing a tie goes along with the long sleeve shirt, so think about this.

Depends on the department's policy. Why don't you talk to the Human Resources offices of depts you might want to get hired by and ask ? Look them up online. I have seen a lot of police officers with visible tattoes, I am sure you will be able to get hired, but your options are going to be limited. But if you really need to have that tattoo, your call.

SOCIETY HAS CHANGED IT MORAL OUT LOOK UPON TATTOOS.

MANY NEW HIRES INTO CORRECTIONS HAVE TATTOOS (NOT GANG RELATED).

IF IT IS OFFENSIVE AND THE DEPARTMENT FEELS SO THEN THEY CAN ASK YOU TO WEAR A LONG SLEEVE SHIRT.

MOST LIKELY THEY WILL NOT.

Well, honestly, it's up to the people that do the hiring. Though generally they wont hire you until you are 21.
