AVI is a generic file container. It can support multiple codecs, such as DV, Divx, MJPEG, etc. Most probably the PS3 supports only certain codecs.

The PS3 currently only supports mpeg4 video files. You'll have to convert the files if you want to play them on your console. Hopefully avi files will be playable in the future (there are rumors that it may be, rumors being the key word).

Currently the ps3 dont support AVI FORMAT
