Yes.
I think at some point in life, everyone deceives themselves. Particularly children.
I can remember anticipating something bad that I knew was going to happen, say, getting in trouble at school, and sort of convincing myself it would not happen.

I think later we deceive ourselves in to thinking that we don't have the faults that we really have, or that our faults are actually virtues. Our culture today encourages us to think this way.

Some people, (myself included) have been tempted at times to adopt a superior attitude, attributing the criticism of others to ulterior motives, such as 'they're just jealous because I am...[insert delusion]'. This is self deception.

I think self-honesty is actually fairly rare, and on the deep issues, quite difficult. I think when those moments of total self honesty come we are changed forever. I also think that maturity, spiritual or otherwise is based on self honesty, and the more self honest a person is able to be, the more whole and mature they will become.

That depends on the definition of self-decievers-is it possible that everyone is on an inevititable trip of eternal damnation, ot is there a greater good that makes humans being more than animals with the ability to reason? My opinion is that if we are all self-decievers, the world itself is on its way to hell in a handbasket; this world has good people, or at least people that want to do good towards others. From volunteers, to artists, this world is filled with color and once the last dollar has been spent and the last fish has been caught, humans will recognize the power of good.

A lot of us are.

Example: After the second world war, the American Troops made the Germans living in the town closest to Auschwitz walk through the concentration camp. As they saw the gas chambers, the ankle deep mounds of Human ash etc, many of them broke down and cried in horror. They claimed absolute ignorance as to what had been happening, despite living so close by.

We all deceive ourselves to different degrees and about different things. But I think that if we couldn't deceive ourselves, at least a little bit, life would be unbearable and it would be hard to resist killing ourselves.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us (1John 1:8).

It's our nature to deceive ourselves. Only by God's Spirit does that get countered.

To a degree. Some more than others. Of course working the 12 steps of A.A. has caused me to be rigorously honest in all I do. Especially with myself.

In this day and age we call it "rationalization." Each of us has the innate ability to come up with all kinds of reasons that whatever nonsense we're up to is right. Doesn't make it so.
