I have a Russian Blue. She's very affectionate and loves attention but hates to be picked up or restrained (she'll sit on your lap if she jumps up there and doesn't feel like she's being restrained). We had a stray adopt us for awhile and think she was a Russian Blue as well. She acted the same way. Is this typical for Russian Blues, or did we just manage to find two cats with similar personalities?

A lot of cat breeds don't like to be held. 2 out of 4 of my Bengals are the same way as your blues. It's all in the way the cat was raised/. 1 of my Bengals came from a breeder, while sweet, she hates being confined or held, unless she comes to you. She was raised in a cage and freaks at the mere sight of one. I also have a rescue Bengal who hates being held, but will come to me. then there are Kaidyn and Kianna, total love bugs who break every trait a Bengal is supposed to have. They love cuddling and being held. They were raised in my home by me and are the best 2 cats I have ever met!

Don't always go by the traits a purebred is supposed to have. It is standard, but not always true. look at the life the cat has led as clues to it's behavior.

In general, Blues are supposed to gentle, affectionate cats
As quoted on CFA profile:
Those attracted by the physical beauty of the Russian Blue find the disposition of these unassuming cats equally appealing. Russian Blues are quiet, clean cats who are playful and loving companions. Despite their shy nature, Russians are devoted and quite affectionate towards their loved ones. They are very intelligent and have been reported to open doors and teach their owners to fetch. Sensitive to the mood of the house, Russians will ‘clown' to quiet a crying baby or sit patting your face to chase away the blues. They get along well with children and other pets.

It's a cat tendency. At least 75% if not more of every cat I have come in contact with doesn't like the feeling of restraint. It's a cat thing.

Most of the cats I have had don't like being held, although there are occasional exceptions.
